"Review: Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:12:26

It took me awhile to write this review because I needed some time to digest the material and consider it’s aftertaste before talking about it. At first bite. I smiled. Witty charming pleasantly humorous this was a book I hoped to savor. In a memoir by Ruth Reichl we discover the truth about fancy shmancy eateries as the former restaurant critic for the New York Times goes undercover at 21. Le Cirque. The Rainbow Room. Windows on the World and more. Ruth comes up with the idea to dine in disguise shortly after accepting the job at the Times. During a flight from LA to NY she meets a woman who recognizes her and tells her that her picture is in every kitchen of every fine restaurant in Manhattan. Alarmed at the amount of information this woman knows about her. Ruth comes to the realization that if she is going to be able to judge these establishments fairly they can’t know she’s there. Being well known can get you the best of everything-excellent service the very best table choice cuts of meat the biggest berries in your dessert. Ruth was much more interested in the dining experience of the average person the masses who would likely be reading her reviews. With the help of an old friend of her mother’s who happens to be an acting coach. Ruth takes on various personas ranging from flamboyant raven haired Brenda to petty snippy Emily. Her elaborate disguises include wigs theater makeup thrift shop costumes and alterations in her voice and personality. Each persona she takes on gets different treatment in the elite restaurants she reviews. This truly becomes restaurant as theater but what else would you expect in New York? The constant stream of lavish meals continuous consumption and ever more cantankerous personas grew tiresome for me to read about. Does every fine restaurant in New York serve a signature version of foie gras and crème brulee? It would seem so. It all becomes a bit tiresome for Ruth as well who after 6 years decides to make a career change (with a nudge from a dying friend and from her son. Nicky who just wants his mom to eat dinner at home now and then). The end of each chapter has tasty-sounding menus that I am anxious to try. I found Garlic and Sapphires entertaining but ultimately it left me feeling hungry rather than satisfied. Yeah great review and What DO You Do? I’ve tasted foie gras and no I don’t care for it. It was a dinner during my honeymoon at Walt Disney World. We were at The Grand Floridian’s Victoria & Albert’s 5 Star restaurant and the first of seven courses was the foie gras. Let’s just say that that was just the beginning of a meal where I took one taste of each dish and then passed it on to the Hubby. I did eat the entire plate of my steak and dessert though. Thank you for all the complimentary comments! No. I don’t write reviews for a living (I wish!) I love to read and I love to write so that would quite possibly be my dream job. I’m a stay at home parent and chronic volunteer (girl scouts soccer church. PTA).. In a former life (before kids) I was an exec recruiter and outside sales manager for an employment service. Hi. I enjoyed this book overall but had a lot of the same thoughts at the end that you did. There’s just so much food and really what is the point of it all? I actually went to hear Reichl speak about this book and it was very interesting. Have you read her other books? I also enjoyed her first memoir the second not as much. K- wow it is a small world! I loved the employment industry and really felt so much satisfaction from helping employers and job seekers find each other. I miss it still but the hours were long the pressure was high and it’s really not conducive to family life. I did it for 10 years and may go back someday. Tara. I bet it was really interesting hearing Reichl speak. I liked her personality and I’d bet she’s quite entertaining in person. I haven’t read the others but may pick up Tender at the Bone. Crystal if you’re a foodie you will love it. I just lent it to my friend who is more into food than me and she loved it. Beastmomma thanks for wandering over! "An Interesting Read" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-12 23:10:25

I stumbled upon this article in the by Clint Confehr from Nov. 21 when I returned to the office from the Thanksgiving pass. I am comfort trying to figure it out. He begins the article by following the sisters of two victims in two cases. One sister. Tammy Ross whose brother was murdered is grateful that her brother's killer (his wife) pleaded guilty and will spend the rest of her life in prison. Tammy Ross didn't be the death penalty because she wants her sister-in-law to be with what she has done. The other sister. Barbara cook whose sister Brenda Lane was murdered by Gregory Thompson has decided over the years that she would like to watch his execution. The article then goes on to address Daryl Holton making assumptions as to why Holton chose the electric chair and posing some questions for consideration by readers. Several things struck me a few of which I ordain mention here: Confehr says that "penalise versus closure is this tale of two sisters." One sister wants the killer to remain in prison while the other wants the death penalty. From what I can tell he equates the one sister's desire for life in prison with revenge while equating the death penalty with closure. I would argue that those equations are faulty and should be reversed. What will be different for Barbara cook the day after Thompson is executed? She will have witnessed the execution of a very mentally ill man who murdered her sister over 20 years ago a sister who by her own account was probably praying for Thompson at the time of the murder. So killing him would recognise her memory? Sadly because of the death penalty system she has waited 23 years for the promise of "closure" via the death penalty when all the while Thompson has been locked up and would be so. I would argue that Tammy Ross the sister in the first scenario will begin to move on not waiting years for a declare to be carried out that will change nothing. In prison perhaps Kimberly Ross the killer of Tammy Ross' brother can come to terms with what she did and finally express some remorse for her despicable actions. The death penalty cuts off such a possibility. And as far as Greg Thompson goes. Mr. Confehr states. "Apparently he wasn't insane when he killed Brenda Lane." Just because a court does not find a person to be insane certainly doesn't mean that they are not. An insanity defense rarely prevails in Tennessee even when mental health experts testify to the person's illness. In fact in the last decade no insanity defense has prevailed in a Tennessee courtroom. As far as Thompson is concerned he has a 4000 plus page register of severe mental illness history since his time in prison and what Mr. Confehr does not mention is that prior to the murder of Brenda Lane. Thompson was experiencing symptoms of mental illness so much so that his family tried to get him treatment but could not afford it. The truth is that the command public still does not understand mental illness and its affect on populate's hold of reality. Of the four people that Tennessee has executed in the modern era three had some form of mental illness. These tragic murders and the cause on family members is devastating. I hope and pray that both Tammy Ross and Barbara Brown can sight some healing and peace. But. I also continue to hope and pray that someday as a society we will own what the death penalty really is: not closure but revenge. I hope and pray that we will stop spending millions of dollars to kill populate for killing people and instead spend the money to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place. If three of four populate who undergo been executed in Tennessee were mentally ill might lives have been saved if we had spent money to reach them before these tragedies occurred?

I thought it was antique brass but come to sight out it was alter shiny brass. Ok maybe we try it on something else.. she came in and we used her magic cleaner on my most difficult jobs! Everyone of them was a success. Areas that were thought to be ruined.. like my stove come down pans and the edge of a drain. The stain on the counter and the spot on the frig door. I had tried EVERYTHING on these areas and nothing worked. So for a mere 199.99 I could get 2 quarts of her magic cleaner which was highly concentrated. PLUS she would throw in 2 spray bottles and a little pack of color pads which were a perfect 2x4 inch rectangle. SOLD! (Ooooh if you are reading this Sweet Hubby. I DID learn my lesson!) You know that saying "There is a sucker born everyday"?... I am the one on Nov. 8th. 1960. To make a long story short the cleaner was NOT magic.... but the little green pad WAS!! Come to find out the cleaner (I think it was Pine Sol in a different store) was no more effective than my own cleaner but the green miricle pad was just as effective with plain old water! These little pads had the words "scotch" lightly printed on them. You can get them at ANY grocery store for $1.29 for 3 large pads. You just need to cut your own little ones for a total of 9 pads. She only gave me 6!!! So here is my kitchen tip: I do not use these.

"Diabetes Health Leaders Finally Realizing Low-Carb Diet Has Merit" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:50:02

When I asked Dr. Richard D. Feinman professor of biochemistry at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. New York and renowned low-carb researcher about when he thought diabetes health leaders--including the American Diabetes Association (ADA)--would start realizing livin' la vida low-carb has merit during his say was hopeful."With diabetes carbohydrate restriction has been a traditional treatment and because the underlying physiology is obvious and accepted. Since low carbohydrates stabilize glucose and insulin excursions we can expect develop pretty soon. change surface the ADA is probably trying to back into carbohydrate restriction with a minimum of losing face."Well it's about to come about and none too soon. According to my friend and fellow low-carb blogger Laura Dolson from the web site there are to be announced in January 2008. It seems they are FINALLY listened to those of us who advocate carbohydrate restriction and are are going to abandon their. So much for people like dictating what diabetes policy looks like in the United States and it's about measure. Coming in January 2008 the ADA is expected to publish new dietary guidelines for populate suffering with diabetes where livin' la vida low-carb will be acknowledged and promoted as one way to improve the symptoms of this awful disease. A talking head from the ADA states "there is growing recognition that a variety of diets including low carbohydrate diets can bring home the bacon charge loss [and] improve postprandial daub glucose." We'll definitely be looking forward to the new ADA dietary guidelines coming in the January 2008 air of Diabetes Care and report to you any positive changes they are expected to make. be tuned! In the meantime the paradigm alter is also happening in the grassroots among those who are passionate about helping people with diabetes. Take Jackie Eberstein co-author of and who worked directly with the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins for three decades for example. In celebration of National Diabetes Month in November she wrote. Her overall communicate is one of prevention--knowing the warning signs BEFORE you are diagnosed with diabetes changing your lifestyle to put yourself in a exceed lay to forbid it and take the affect of diabetes health as serious as your heart health. Essentially diabetes has become a rampant disease of modern society because of our poor dietary habits and over 1 in 5 undergo no idea they undergo it (a dangerous displace to be in considering carbohydrates--poison for diabetics--are the primary macronutrient in most American households). Untreated diabetes leaves a haunting trail of obvious symptoms:"Once the disease has progressed common symptoms such as extreme thirst extreme ache back up urination unexplained weight loss unusual fatigue blurred vision and the decrease healing of cuts and bruises makes the diagnosis easier," Eberstein explained. "But by the measure these symptoms are apparent blood dulcify levels have been elevated for a desire measure causing silent alter to every cell in the body."These are merely precursors to the change surface worse damage that can happen to your body including cancer and Alzheimer's disease--something neurologist describes in his book as "write 3 diabetes."Eberstein expresses her concern that the ADA has traditionally recommended a low-fat low-calorie diet that includes too many carbohydrates for a diabetic causing them to rely on upwards of 3-6 medications to act their disease moderately controlled. She is deeply disturbed by the potential and known align effects of these drugs while the ADA has turned a blind eye to the negative force extra sugars and refined flour undergo had on this. I know she will be anxious to see the new changes in the ADA recommendations go January. Be sure to analyse out all the diabetes assay factors that Eberstein notes for populate with Type 2 diabetes in. It very well could save your life or the life of your loved one. Another exciting development regarding the embracing of the low-carb communicate for diabetics comes from the top diabetes blogger online today--Amy Tenderich from. Although I was less than impressed by her lack of even a hit acknowledgment of livin' la vida low-carb for people with diabetes in her 2007 book channel. I was blown away to see Tenderich was willing to at least hear what actual low-carbers have to say about what they eat to hold back their diabetes with the low-carb lifestyle when she from the members of my new. She was so moved by my readers that she. THANKS Amy and I'm happy to see your openness to new ideas that go against everything you've ever known to be adjust in the past. That takes courage and strength beyond the scope of modern journalism to do and I applaud you for it. But Tenderich didn't forbid there. analyse out her where she lists "10 Ways to interact Diabetes With Diet." She particularly points out that diabetics need to watch their carbs to hold back their A1c levels be aware of the carb circumscribe in the foods they eat avoid "carb-heavy choices," check out for corn syrup on nutritional labels not equate sugar-free with carb-free and the beat one of them all--CURB THE CARBS (go straight to #7 for this one!). Sure she still sticks with the low-fat mantra that has been what she's known for years but at least Tenderich is moving in the alter direction. Her conclusion regarding past ADA recommendations is sight on:"There’s a lot of controversy over the ADA's food benefit for people with diabetes because they recommend more breads grains and starches (carb-heavy foods) than anything else," Tenderich stated. "We have to side with the patients-in-the-know: act the carbs low for exceed hold back of daub dulcify."And that my low-carb friends is what I label progress in this effort to bring legitimacy and practicality to the world of diabetes health. This is merely the beginning of a major dress in health policy that could very come up come down into the command dietary recommendations at some point in the future. First things first though. Let's get diabetics eating this way and vastly improving their health and then the turnaround will communicate for itself.

In Parts and. I used voting records to show that portrayals of Sen. Hillary Clinton as a "Corporate Democrat" are extraordinarily misleading and that her actual voting preserve - although not perfect - is very progressive on matters pertaining to corporatist interests. I'd like to return to this topic today because one of Sen. Obama's of Sen. Clinton's record has been on the topic of "special interests" (emphasis exploit throughout this post): back up the affect of lobbyists and special interests who control too much of the agenda in Washington must be reduced and the voices of the American people must be heard again. Barack Obama has a history of taking on the special interests and winning. He has a track record of leading the way on reform and disclosure. Barack Obama will be beholden to no one but the American people when he wins. Senator Clinton embraces the current system in Washington and is the anointed candidate of Washington raising more money from PACs and Washington lobbyists than any candidate in either celebrate... Opening up and reforming government has been a primary create in Obama’s life not just a convenient set of issues in a political race. Given that and the on Sen. Obama's use of special interest/PAC funds. I thought it would be worth focusing some attention on PAC/lobbyist contributions to Sen. Obama's and Sen. Clinton's campaigns as come up as their voting records (Since Sen. Edwards has and I don't undergo his Progressive Punch voting scores. I am largely not including him in this assessment - however. I have discussed his voting record in ). For clarity. I've divided this affix into the following sections (the data in Sections 2-5 are reproduced as-is from of this series and have not been updated since): The table below summarizes the career fundraising data for and from the wonderful (Note: the percentages may not add to 100% due to rounding and the $ values are as of 9/30/07; for reference data for Sen. Edwards ). I discuss the implications of the data towards the end of this section. One thing to keep in mind is that since Sen. Clinton has been in Congress more than twice as long as Sen. Obama. [*compose: The "Other" category is by CRP as follows - " OTHER: All other revenues collected by the race such as interest from the race's bank accounts and loans from outside sources. This figure is calculated by subtracting PAC individual and candidate money from be revenues received. Negative numbers generally indicate an accounting error by the campaign " I don't have the break-up of individual v. PAC sources for the funds in the "Other" category.] Before I summarize the implications of the data above let's also compare Sen. Obama's and Sen. Clinton's PAC contributions from delay 1.2 Federal campaign finance summaries on PAC receipts as a percentage of total receipts for Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama (obtain: bear on for Responsive Politics) 1.1 Sen. Clinton has raised much more in absolute $ from all sources than Sen. Obama has but this is not surprising considering she has been in the U. S. Senate much longer than Sen. Obama [delay 1.1]. of contributions to Sen. Clinton's and Sen. Obama's campaigns are from individuals [Table 1.1]. Known PAC (incl lobbyist) contributions constitute barely ~2% of Sen. Clinton's be receipts and barely ~1% of Sen. Obama's total receipts ( : I don't have the break-up of the contributions that Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama transferred from "Other" sources). In my schedule this difference is pretty minor especially when I look at this in conjunction with their voting records (discussed below). As I noted in the introduction to this post. Sen. Edwards has. 1.3 With consider to their PAC contributions the percentages of PAC contributions that Sen. Clinton received from business interests (55%) labor (23%) and ideological/single-issue groups (21%) are virtually identical to the percentages of PAC contributions that Sen. Obama received from those same interests (55%. 23%. 22%) [Table 1.1]. 1.4 A review of the PAC funds that Senator Clinton and Sen. Obama received from each business sector - as a percentage of the total contributions they received from that sector - shows marginal differences between Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton in most cases. (The only significant difference is that Sen. Obama received a noticeably higher percentage of PAC funds (to Total funds) from Ideological or Single-Issue Group PACs than Sen. Clinton did) [Table 1.2]. 1.5 In terms of quality of disclosure both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama have comparable levels of disclosure on the source of their funds although Sen. Obama has a slightly higher non-disclosure rate (10.6% to Sen. Clinton's 7.5%) [delay 1.1] that is comparable to Sen. Edwards' non-disclosure evaluate (). I would not usually point this out but I am doing so since Sen. Obama of Sen. Clinton's alleged non-disclosure on some race finance matters. some of the data I on Sen. Obama's and Sen. Clinton's voting records - to provide a direct comparison in this post of their fundraising sources and extent of progressivism in voting patterns. The data below has NOT been updated since I published Part 3 of this series. approach to scoring politicians. They only consider votes in which the majority of the most progressive Democrats in their list voted against the majority of the entire GOP assemble and they rate each member of Congress on how well they vote together with the former against the latter. In other words a very high Progressive Punch score means that the member of Congress mostly voted in adjust with the most progressive Democrats against the GOP. A very low Progressive hit score means the opposite - the member largely abandoned the most progressive members of the Democratic celebrate to choose with the GOP. This is a great way to understand I have summarized the progressive scores for Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton below. The color coding is simple. In each row of the table the higher score is colored green the displace score is colored yellow. My comments on the results are captured below the delay. 2.1 Consistent with my observations (and caveats) in. Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama have very comparable and pretty progressive Progressive Punch voting scores. In fact when we look at the for Sen. Clinton it is apparent that on the whole she voted more progressively and more in adjust with the most progressive Democrats in the Senate (92%) than did Sen. Obama (90%). However since there is likely to be some go in the data. I will act a somewhat conservative approach in this assessment and say that she was at least as progressive overall in her voting patterns as Sen. Obama. Based on this data it is bring together to conclude that Sen. Clinton's and Sen. Obama's voting histories designate a very high consistency of voting with a majority of the most progressive Senators in Congress across a multitude of issues - especially those concerning corporate interests. This does not in any way convey that they never voted badly - of course they undergo done so but on the whole they undergo voted far more in sync with the most progressive members of Congress than otherwise. 2.2. As I showed in posts. Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama are barely different in their Senate voting records on the topics of Iraq and Iran - hence it is not surprising to see that change surface on the topics of War and Peace and Human Rights/Civil Liberties their.

"The ADA Set To Introduce Low-Carb To 2008 Dietary Guidelines" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:48:34

When I asked Dr. Richard D. Feinman professor of biochemistry at SUNY Downstate Medical bear on in Brooklyn. New York and renowned low-carb researcher about when he thought diabetes health leaders--including the American Diabetes Association (ADA)--would start realizing livin' la vida low-carb has merit during his answer was hopeful."With diabetes carbohydrate restriction has been a traditional treatment and because the underlying physiology is obvious and accepted. Since low carbohydrates alter glucose and insulin excursions we can expect develop pretty soon. Even the ADA is probably trying to back into carbohydrate restriction with a minimum of losing face."Well it's about to happen and none too soon. According to my friend and fellow low-carb blogger Laura Dolson from the web site there are to be announced in January 2008. It seems they are FINALLY listened to those of us who advise carbohydrate restriction and are are going to cast aside their. So much for people like dictating what diabetes policy looks desire in the United States and it's about time. Coming in January 2008 the ADA is expected to publish new dietary guidelines for populate suffering with diabetes where livin' la vida low-carb ordain be acknowledged and promoted as one way to improve the symptoms of this awful disease. A talking continue from the ADA states "there is growing recognition that a variety of diets including low carbohydrate diets can bring home the bacon weight loss [and] improve postprandial blood glucose." We'll definitely be looking forward to the new ADA dietary guidelines coming in the January 2008 air of Diabetes compassionate and inform to you any positive changes they are expected to make. Stay tuned! In the meantime the paradigm alter is also happening in the grassroots among those who are passionate about helping populate with diabetes. Take Jackie Eberstein co-author of and who worked directly with the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins for three decades for example. In celebration of National Diabetes Month in November she wrote. Her overall communicate is one of prevention--knowing the warning signs BEFORE you are diagnosed with diabetes changing your lifestyle to put yourself in a better position to avoid it and take the subject of diabetes health as serious as your heart health. Essentially diabetes has become a rampant disease of modern society because of our poor dietary habits and over 1 in 5 undergo no idea they have it (a dangerous place to be in considering carbohydrates--poison for diabetics--are the primary macronutrient in most American households). Untreated diabetes leaves a haunting trail of obvious symptoms:"Once the disease has progressed common symptoms such as extreme thirst extreme hunger back up urination unexplained charge loss unusual fatigue blurred vision and the slow healing of cuts and bruises makes the diagnosis easier," Eberstein explained. "But by the time these symptoms are apparent daub dulcify levels have been elevated for a desire time causing silent damage to every cell in the be."These are merely precursors to the even worse damage that can come about to your body including cancer and Alzheimer's disease--something neurologist describes in his book as "write 3 diabetes."Eberstein expresses her concern that the ADA has traditionally recommended a low-fat low-calorie fast that includes too many carbohydrates for a diabetic causing them to believe on upwards of 3-6 medications to keep their disease moderately controlled. She is deeply disturbed by the potential and known align effects of these drugs while the ADA has turned a alter eye to the negative force extra sugars and refined dredge have had on this. I know she will be anxious to see the new changes in the ADA recommendations come January. Be sure to analyse out all the diabetes risk factors that Eberstein notes for people with write 2 diabetes in. It very well could save your life or the life of your loved one. Another exciting development regarding the embracing of the low-carb message for diabetics comes from the top diabetes blogger online today--Amy Tenderich from. Although I was less than impressed by her lack of change surface a hit acknowledgment of livin' la vida low-carb for people with diabetes in her 2007 book channel. I was blown away to see Tenderich was willing to at least comprehend what actual low-carbers have to say about what they eat to control their diabetes with the low-carb lifestyle when she from the members of my new. She was so moved by my readers that she. THANKS Amy and I'm happy to see your openness to new ideas that go against everything you've ever known to be true in the past. That takes courage and strength beyond the scope of modern journalism to do and I gesticulate you for it. But Tenderich didn't stop there. Check out her where she lists "10 Ways to Treat Diabetes With Diet." She particularly points out that diabetics need to watch their carbs to hold back their A1c levels be aware of the carb content in the foods they eat forbid "carb-heavy choices," check out for corn syrup on nutritional labels not consider sugar-free with carb-free and the best one of them all--CURB THE CARBS (go straight to #7 for this one!). Sure she comfort sticks with the low-fat mantra that has been what she's known for years but at least Tenderich is moving in the right direction. Her conclusion regarding past ADA recommendations is spot on:"There’s a lot of controversy over the ADA's food benefit for people with diabetes because they recommend more breads grains and starches (carb-heavy foods) than anything else," Tenderich stated. "We have to side with the patients-in-the-know: keep the carbs low for exceed hold back of blood dulcify."And that my low-carb friends is what I label progress in this effort to bring legitimacy and practicality to the world of diabetes health. This is merely the beginning of a major dress in health policy that could very come up cascade into the command dietary recommendations at some point in the future. First things first though. Let's get diabetics eating this way and vastly improving their health and then the turnaround will communicate for itself.
